How does an average, relatively unsophisticated, home computer user wind up with "ransomware?" Does he / she have to do something "stupid" or is "ransomware" more like a tornado---a wrong place / wrong time issue?

You said how, it is unsophisticated and unrestricted. Running windows especially increases your chances. You just need to go on the internet being unsecured. A way around ransomware is reinstall. It is easier with linux by the way. Be sure to keep backups.
