How on earth can people possibly accuse you of being "shady" if you are asking or at least trying to ask people a question, but at the very least are definitely making them aware of a problem or bad situation instead of being silent about it or going behind their backs?

Its Natural to be afraid of people one doesn't know  and when that person starts talking to us about a bad situation makes the scenario and feelings even worse.
