The smell is just of the clothes. New clothes have a smell too if you think about going into a department store. The Thrift Store has clothing that has been worn and washed many times in some instances. Any one that washes clothing knows that clothing after awhile retains smells from the wearer. The washing does not always remove this smell so after a while the smell becomes part of the used clothing. Put a collection of this clothing together along with the fact that it has probably been shoved in the back of a drawer or closet and as such get that packed away smell in addition so mix it all together, Thrift Store!

Thank you! Do you also get the same smell from your closet, basement or attic? I guess clothes or stuff that have been stored for a long time get that smell. Is this true?

They sure do! I know old clothes that I have put away smell of that put away smell. The lack of air and confinement concentrates the odor. My closet doesn't;t have the smell because it has air that circulates and the movement of clothing and items that makes it so odors don't concentrate, Like if you stick something in the back of the fridge and don't pull it out it will smell.

In my State, Indiana, they require the clothes to be dry cleaned or steam cleaned or washed in bleach. What you smell is the residue of the dry cleaning solution used to make certain there are no bugs or bacteria on these clothes. There is also a mustness to things like baskets, that have been stored in garages and attics.

Regarding the last sentence on your comment, do those things that have been stored in garages and attics smell like thrift store? Answering this would help me a lot with my research. Could you do me a favor please? Could you try to pick a clothes that have been stored on your closet for a long time and does it smell the same as the thrift store smell? Thanks a lot!
