Hopefully it is no more than linear solenoid problems. The linear solenoid controls shifting in the transmission. It sounds like transmission problems, or some other like drive train problem.


Still, one can not get an accurate assessment on the web, one will need a mechanic.

Your transmission probably lost first gear. Based on reliability ratings the 1998 Pontiac Grand Am is not notorious for transmission issues, but it seems like if you lost first gear that's what it is.
