Keep in mind that zombies generally originate from people. Where are there the most people the most often? Avoid any heavily populated areas as although there are several places to hide, there are even more zombies to smell/find you out. Although the countryside and woods are harder to survive in alone, there are very few people (read: Zombies) to find/eat you there. Furthermore, zombies tend to be kind of slow with short attention spans; if you can make an immediate, fast evacuation to nature-heavy areas (places with water/food sources, especially), chances are the zombies will either a) not be able to chase you fast enough or b) will lose their attention towards you eventually.

Just remember how "28 Days Later" ended: The group found a very secluded cabin far away from major towns and cities. They developed a temporary self-survival sense. The sweeping camera angles showed that they were so secluded, even the very few zombies that did look for them starved before they even got close, riddling the lonely dirt road with decrepit zombie bodies...

Then again you could just attach a chainsaw to your severed hand...

There are quite a few sadly. Don't stay at home. A house is pretty fragile if you want to get in and not worried about the neighbors calling the police to report a loud bang. There is lots of glass to easily breakthrough.

Avoid hospitals, which are crowded places, and it would be best to avoid those. If a Zombie bit someone, where is the first place a friend or family member would take them? That's right, the hospital! Office buildings. At first glance, they are tall and have lots of floors to go to, but office buildings are also a deathtrap, with just one exit. In short, avoid anywhere where people would normally go.

I think you should avoid graveyards at all times because that is where they emerge from.

Graves and churches. They are dug up in graves and then they are brought to "life" in churches.

Hospitals, churches, any densely populated areas such as apartment buildings and malls.  A couple of safe places you could go are inner city areas such as Compton or Inglewood, since every home there is already built like a fortress with bars on the windows and screen doors with deadbolts.
