What Does Cardiac Arrest Mean?

The term 'cardiac arrest' means a sudden halt in blood circulation due heart failure. It is the unexpected termination of heartbeat, which results in loss of effective circulation. When the ventricles of the heart fail to contract, there is a resultant loss in the heart-beat which in turn leads to lack of oxygen to the system. This eventually results in the death of the person. Thus, it is the lack of oxygen supply to the brain or cerebral hypoxia which makes victims breathless, lose their consciousness and cause the heart to stop.

Cardiac arrest needs immediate medical attention. It should be given prior attention and treated. The first aid related to cardiac arrest is known as CPR or cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

When the heart stops.  Its not a heart attack. Heart attack means a part of the heart is not able to function properly, but cardiac arrest is when heart completely stops!!!
