    Alan is a popular masculine name. Its meaning is not known for certain. Nevertheless there are several theories regarding the same. Some experts feel it is of Old German origin, meaning 'precious'. Others feel equally confident it is a Gaelic name which is derived from the word 'ailin' which means 'little rock'.

    The first name Alan was originally introduced to the English followers of the great William the Conqueror. Notable among these Bretons was Alan, the Earl of Brittany. He was rewarded for his loyal service with large estates in the newly acquired kingdom.

    Alun is the Welsh version of Alan. There are many famous men with the name Alan. These include Alan Bean the American astronaut, Alan Bennett the English writer, Alan Alda the American writer, actor and director and the Alan Williams the Welsh Minister of Parliament.
