AIM is short for AOL Instant Messenger, a messaging service provided by popular youth interactive web site America OnLine. It is basically proprietary freeware that supports advertisements and promotion on the site, which makes use of the OSCAR messaging protocol as well as the TOC protocol. AOL came out with it in the year 1997, in the month of May at the time when the Instant Messaging bug was just affecting teenagers.

AIM lets its subscribed users communicate in real time through text, voice and even video broadcast on the Internet. One can chat with friends and even make new friends based on one's interest and preferences.

The most recent version of AIM offers its users a variety of features such as Buddy List docking, capability to modify Buddy Lost fonts, and a host of other stuff.
