    The term portal vein thrombosis is used to define a clot which is formed in the portal vein of the human body. It is a form of venous thrombosis. It affects the portal vein. It can lead to the hypertension of the portal vein and the reduction in the supply of blood to the liver in the human body.

    The causes of portal vein thrombosis can include such ailments as pancreatitis, cirrhosis, diverticulitis and cholangiocarcinoma. The treatments of portal vein thrombosis include anticoagulants, shunts, bypass surgery and transplants.

    One of the more serious variants of portal vein thrombosis is pylephlebitis. The word pylephlebitis is also called infective suppurative thrombosis of the portal vein. Pylephlebitis, or infective suppurative thrombosis of the portal vein, is defined as an inflammation of the portal vein or any of its branches. It is usually one of the complications of intraabdominal sepsis, which often follows either diverticulitis or appendicitis.
