The invention of the electric kettle is attributed to Arthur Leslie Large. In 1922 his new plug in kettle superseded boiling a kettle of water by placing it on a stove. This was the first time that people had heated kettles of water in their own homes without using fire or direct heat of one sort or another.
Other manufacturers piled into this new market, with General Electric introducing an electric kettle with an automatic cut out in 1930.
A milestone in electric kettle technology was reached in 1959 with the launch by manufacturer Russell Hobbs of the "Forgettable" range, so called because of their improved automatic bi-metallic strip cut off switch and cool touch handle and lid handle.
The "Forgettable" range largely put paid to whistling kettles which forced steam through a whistle placed on the spout or lid to give out a high pitched whistling noise to let everyone within earshot it was time to look out the teapot.

Apparently Arthur Leslie Large was the inventor who came up with a plug-in kettle back in 1922. Check this link for some more good information. www.memorystore.org.uk
