A dog can survive for quite a while without food but it depends on their health and physical condition before the period of starvation. It is said that they can go without food for about three or four weeks without access to food. Thus they can survive for a longer period than human. But food is a source of water too apart from the daily amount of drinking water.
But it is harder for a dog without water. Water deprivation would cause dehydration and in extreme hot weathers it can even lead to short in as short as a day. But otherwise the longest period a dog can survive without water is as long as a week. Dogs ideally need fresh water daily just like humans. Salt water can create problems in dogs and many also believe that it can cause diarrhoea.

It makes me wonder why someone would want to know this.
Why would someone want to know this?
My dog is ill and off his food, he's now on medication but I'm worried about him and I want to know how he'll be without food while the medication takes effect. It's reassuring to know he'll be fine with water until his appetite comes back.
My golden retriever has a elevated b.u.n of 37 and is on a prescription diet by my vet - how long can she go without food?

I needed to know that due to my dog going off his food due to illness, he's on medication now so hopefully he'll want to eat soon but I was concerned over his lack of appetite.
I also wanted to know because my 15 year old ailing Beagle has stopped eating...and after 5 days now he is too weak to really move. He just yesterday stopped drinking...The vet injected him with a lot of fluids but I didn't know if that would take the place of drinking or not...I love my dog and do not want him suffering...

I also needed to know that because my dog hasn't eaten in 5 days due to diarrhea and vomiting. I am really worried. I have taken her to the vet twice and she was given vitamin injections, electrolyte mixture and antibiotics. The diarrhea stopped after 2 days but not the vomiting. We have been spoon feeding her with the electrolyte solution, water and the antibiotics. I tried feeding her chicken soup, boiled rice and pasta but she isn't taking any.
Our 13 yr. Old dog is on medication because they found fluid on the heart and a heart problem, She's showing some improvement now but she's stopped eating but drinks plenty of water. I'm concerned because it's been 7days and now she has diarrhea. What to do? I hate to take her back to vet because they may want to put her down :(

Awww. Thats sad :(
I wanted to know because my aunt was found dead in her house, last seen two weeks ago, but her dog is still alive. We are trying to figure out her estimated time of death before hearing from coroner's.
