Bubble gum was invented by Walter E. Diemer, an American born in Pennsylvania. Walter Diemer was an accountant by profession, working with Fleer Chewing Gum Company of Philadelphia when he accidentally invented bubble gum in the year 1928. It was his hobby to experiment with new gum recipes in his spare time and it led him to this great invention.
At the time when Walter Diemer invented bubble gum, chewing gum was in the market for over half a century. One day he made a new gum and to his surprise found that the new brew was different from all others. The new gum was less sticky and stretched more easily than regular chewing gum. It was Walter himself who took this new gum to the store to test the market and found that a basketful of gums he had, sold out in hours. This new gum was christened Dubble Bubble by Fleer Chewing Gum Company and witnessed surging sales as never experienced in the gum industry.
