for eg say you open microsoft word, on opening it various files needed for running office like template , spell check files etc will be loaded to RAM and on closing the application the contents in the RAM will be cleared and this is why we loose unsaved data. To do this if we save, the contents of the RAM will be saved in the hard disc
The most important defining characteristic of a RAM is that it can access all of the memory locations at almost the speed.
It is a small chip approx 1.5" (h) x 6" (w).
It is set on one of the slot on motherboard of the computer system.
It is used to store data when the computer is start.
RAM is a required part in computer system.
The RAM's memory is volatile; means the memory is removed when the
computer is turned off.
It comes in multiple memory size and operating frequencies.
Nowadays most common memory size on RAM chip are:
512 MB, 1GB, 2GB, 4GB
It is generally considered that higher amount of memory means good speed.
However it is only half true. Higher frequency is also important.
There are multiple type of RAMs in use today:
DDR1, DDR2, DDR3
DDR3 is the newest one, more faster, and efficient.
Most of motherboards support only one type of RAM among them.
So, DDR3 type of RAM can not be set on a slot made for a DDR2 RAM.
Well, there is much more about the RAM that can be written.
Wikipedia.org is a good source for more depth information on this matter.
RAM is the most common type of memory found in computers and other devices, such as printers.
