There are various reasons because of which joints may crack. Basically a joint is the point at which two bones meet. This is a very sensitive area and whenever it gets under stress or pressure then bones can move from their places and the joint can crack. There are three types of joints including, hinge joint, ball and socket joints and immovable joints. Now, bones in the joints are positioned in their proper place and the stress or a pressure can displace the bone from the exact location. In this way the joint may crack. Moreover, on joints the cartilage is very smooth and there is a fluid cushion which keeps the joins flexible. When you exercise, play, carry weight or falls then the pressure can dislocate the joint and it may crack.

Thanks for your response. I didn't phrase the question right.
I was asking more why sometimes I feel the need to crack my joints (like my knuckles)... It seriously hurts sometimes until I release the pressure. Seems that most other resources on the web suggest that it's in my head and that I should try to redirect my attention instead of cracking them.
Did find an interesting article that goes into the reasons for the sound itself. There are actually three causes suggested including gas escaping from the joint (I think it's actually synovial fluid), movement of connective tissues around the joint, or rough surfaces as in osteoarthritis.

Yes very right! I personally think that gas escaping from the joint and the inability to get it back as soon as possible is the main reason.
