The word analysis is defined as an investigation of the component parts of a whole It also includes the relationship between each of the component parts of the whole. These relationships between each of the component parts of the whole are crucial in making up the whole.

In the field of literature, the word analysis is used to refer to a form of literary criticism. In an analytical piece, the structure of the piece of writing is analysed. An analysis, in the context of language, is defined as the use of those words which belong to a closed class of words instead of using inflections.

Analysis is also defined as a branch of mathematics which involves the use of calculus and the theory of limits, sequences, series, integration and differentiation. A person who analyses data is known as an analyst. A person who analyses psychological information is known as a psychoanalyst.
