Hemoglobin is an iron-containing protein in the red blood cells.  It carries oxygen from the lungs to other parts of the body.  Measurement of hemoglobin concentration is one of the most commonly performed blood test and is usually part of a CBC (complete blood count).

Normal hemoglobin ranges:

Women: 12.1 to 15.1
Men: 13.5 to 16.5
Children: 11 to 16
Pregnant women: 11 to 12

Typically, you want a range between 11.0 and 13.0 for a healthy level. Hope this helps.
