What Is A Planet?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The International Astronomical Union (IAU) developed some definitions in 2001, modified them again in 2003, and as of August 24, 2006, the IAU has come up with another definition. The IAU said in a statement that the definition for a planet is now officially known as "a celestial body that  is in orbit around the Sun,  has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape and has cleared the neighborhood around its orbit."
