The largest state in the United States in terms of land area is the state of Alaska(656,425 sq miles) but it is sparsely populated owing to the extreme cold climate. In terms of population the largest state in the United States is California (about 36 million people) owing to its warm climate, fertile areas and large influx of immigrants. The second largest state is Texas both in terms of land area as well as population and is also one of the leading agricultural and industrial regions in the United States.
The highest point in the United States is Mt. McKinley in Alaska State at a height of 20,320 ft (6,194mts) above sea level while the lowest point is the Death Valley in California State at 282 ft (86mts) below sea level.
The major cities in Alaska are Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau which is the capital, the state is also an important part of the energy scenario in the United States with the discovery of a large oil and gasreservoir at Prudhoe Bay in 1968.
California is well known for a number of reasons from being a major tourist destination boasting of places like Yosemite National Park, Disneyland and Hollywood to being one of the most progressive states along with Texas and of course for its Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. The major cities are Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose and San Francisco all of which are counted among the important cities in the United States.

In terms of population, the largest state in the USA is California with 36,457,549 inhabitants (estimate as of 2006). Ironically, by population, Alaska is one of the smallest states with under 700,000 people, ranking only higher than North Dakota, Vermont, and Wyoming.

Alaska is the largest state. Texas is the second largest and California is the third largest. Before Alaska was found, people in Texas could brag about how their state was the largest. But alaska was then found later.

What most people don't realize that our maps were not perfectly to scale until around the 1960s, and even today we still use out of date maps. Have you noticed that on the older maps the USA takes up half of Africa? When in reality Africa is 77.5% larger.

So now when you look on most older maps you'll see that Texas is larger than Alaska, VISUALLY, when in reality and shown on new maps, you'll clearly see Alaska looks nearly double the size of Texas.
