To find out the percentage of Mandy's class who take chorus, we must convert the fraction given into a percentage by multiplication. Ordinarily, we would know how many people are in Mandy's class in total, otherwise we could not complete this calculation. For the sake of simplicity, let's assume there are 20 students in Mandy's class, including Mandy herself.

Of the class of twenty, two-fifths take part in chorus. To find out a fifth of anything, we simply divide the larger number by 5, then multiply by the number of fifths we need to find. So:

20 divide 5 = 4.  4 x 2 = 8.

Therefore, out of Mandy's class of 20, we know 8 take chorus. 8 is two-fifths of 20.

So, How Do We Express 8 as a Percentage of 20?

To do this, and learn how to describe two-fifths of anything as a percentage, we need a calculator. If you have no calculator, type in 'calculator' into Google, and a online calculator will appear onscreen.

Get your calculator and type in '8 divide 20' and the calculator should show 0.4. Multiply by 100 and your answer is: 40% (remember to put the "%" so people know it is "per 100"). You can double check by dividing the two numbers in the fraction itself: 2 divide 5 (x 1 00) = 40%.

Two fifths of any number expressed as a percentage will always be 40%. Of Mandy's class, 8 of 20 take chorus; therefore 40% take chorus, two-fifths of the class.
