I really want (not need) an answer from a friend, about a possible meet-up. Nothing big, just a do on in my hometown and we might both be going. He's only said stuff like "hopefully" etc. I don't want to harass, but do I leave it or keep asking?

Theres a good chance he is avoiding an answer on purpose, possibly because he doesnt want to be rude but really doesnt want to go or maybe he aleady is taking someone, etc.  Maybe he is trying to think of a nice way to turn you down

Leave it. He'll appreciate not being bugged to death over this. If you speak / text him again, tell him it would be great if he could come and then DROP the subject. Find someone else to go with and perhaps you will see him there.

Blokes can be vague, they can also be vague to wish to appear smooth or aloof, but sometimes just because they are vague. Decide to go yourself and take another friend with you, if he turns up great, if he doesn't,  well you're still there to enjoy yourself.
