Where did the term ( commonly used in carpentry and such ) " pilot hole " originate from?

I looked up the etymology of "pilot."  The term pilot has been used since the 1920s to mean "serving as a prototype".  It is in this sense that you get terms like pilot episode and pilot program.

Back in the 1600's pilot had the meaning "to guide".  This is the meaning behind the term pilot hole.
