I’ve compared both gas generators and whole-house battery systems, and honestly, they each have their pros and cons. But if you're thinking long-term and care about ease of use, battery systems have a lot going for them.

Gas generators are strong and reliable, but they’re loud, require fuel, and need regular maintenance. You also have to store gas safely, and that’s not always convenient. On top of that, they produce emissions, so they can’t be used indoors or too close to your home. For some people, all of that adds stress during an already stressful situation like a blackout.

Whole-house battery systems, on the other hand, are clean and quiet. You just set them up once, and they’re ready to go. Many work with solar panels, which means you can keep them charged even if the grid stays down for a while. You won’t have to worry about running out of gas or pulling a cord in the middle of the night.

The system I use as my home backup power is the EcoFlow Delta Pro Ultra. It gives me both 120V and 240V output, has solar charging, and has enough capacity to power most of my home without fumes or noise.
