What is your view on Bobby Sands? Do you see him as a hero?

Bobby Sands was not a hero. He was an unfortunate romantic, involved with an organisation responsible for over 2800 deaths in the name of "nationalism". He was probably not a bad man though.

As Margaret Thatcher said "He chose to take his own life, a choice not given to many of his organisations victims." (Or something similar).

There was nothing good about "the troubles", nothing that justified so many deaths and so much tragedy. There were no "gallant paramilitaries fighting the imperialist Brits"  there was just death, pain and suffering - and for nothing, ultimately.

P.S. there is a street in Iran named after Bobby Sands. He iswasn't treated as a hero in my country. In fact the British Embassy is located there. However, the embassy closed down their it's door to Bobby Sands street and opened another doors at the other side of the building which now open to Ferdowsi street

Across the world, one man's "freedom fighter" is another man's terrorist, and I don't know everything. I'd be interested to know how such a man becomes a hero in a country that is not part of the narrow Irish nationalist tradition though. There were no heroes on any side in "the troubles" as I said (a long while before) just death and suffering in the name of some very bad causes.
