Yes they do it all the time. I call them hero's. Others call them officer, fire fighter, or military man.
Would a guy die to save a girl he doesn't know ?
In some cases they would and do.
Many have died for people they didn't know .... Gender isn't usually the motivation.
People die helping strangers everyday. Gender is rarely a factor.
