Contrary to popular belief, waving your arms around can help, it doesn't (as old wives' tales would have you believe) make them any more annoyed. Wasps (at this time of the year) are attracted to sweet things and things that smell sweet. (They can smell "suitable to eat" fruit from 50 yards away). Avoiding  such sweet (and sweet-smelling) things will discourage them in the first place.

I've heard that if you kill them it triggers a noise that attracts other wasps, doesn't sound logical to me!

I've heard that as well. I've had to get rid of two wasps nests this year. On one occasion I used good old fashioned RAID, on the second occasion I "got a man in". In the meantime I've killed dozens when they have started to become a nuisance. I was never attacked by their best friends. :)
