Generic term. Maybe it's even an eponym in the same sense that we can hoover the carpet with any brand of vacuum cleaner, or we slap on a band aid even if it wasn't manufactured by Johnson and Johnson.

But all this coffee talk has made me thirsty. I'm gonna bail out and make a cup.

Back in the day, a coffee table was a smaller and lower table used as a focal point for conversation and to place y our coffee (tea) so your hands would be free to either eat or thumb thru the "coffee table picture books".

A coffee table is a style of long, low table which is designed to be placed in front of, or next to, a sofa or upholstered chairs to support beverages, magazines, books, decorative objects and other small items to be used while sitting.

In some situations, such as during a party, plates of food may be placed on the table.

It's not a stupid question, Megan, if you don't know. Hope this helps.
