It allows us to exchange ideas with people who are in a different place or time.
It's great for keeping records we don't want to lose. As one wag put it, "I thought a thought, but the thought I thought, was not the thought I thought I thought. And so when next a thought I think, I think I'll write it down with pen and ink."
