"Genre" just means anything recognizably different. For example, "Silent Night", "Amazing Grace", and "House Of The Rising Sun" can all be sung to each other's tunes because they are all in the genre defined by tempo and rhyme. But each is also a member of another genre, "Christmas Carols", "Gospel Songs", and "Pop".

Country, pop, classic rock, metal, rap... Country, rock, rap, and classical/orchestral for sure. Any others might be considered sub genres... Like rock there's classic, glam, metal, pop, punk, acid the list could go forever.
