Are there any uniquely themed festivals in your area? We have the Tug Fest, a tug-of-war across the Mississippi River.

There are only a few I know of in North Carolina. There is the BBQ festival in Lexington. Statues of pigs line the streets, so I'm told. There is a fruit festival, apples I think, in Mt. Airy. We have all kinds of festivals here in Louisville.  Of course there's the (2 week long) Kentucky Derby Festival, then there's the Blues and Bourbon festival, and many others. My personal favorite is the 2 day Jane Austen festival.
