When posting a question on here...Is picking a relevant topic as the next step important or is it okay just to skip that?

No, it isn't ! 9 out of 10 questions I've ever asked come under topics irrelevant . It's supposed to be under a topic in case some people are following that topic but rarely does it get used. You can skip it but if there is something close to your question, pick that. Otherwise, just click Topic Irrelevant and continue.
