I wouldn't have the foggiest, Rooster, but here's a bit of related trivia you might enjoy. Did you know that Chicken Yakitori was the name of the only surviving Kamikaze pilot? He was chicken!

Dear Rooster,

Tx to you I am learning lots of WWII Pacific Theater websites...

I think your answer may be the fleet referred by the Allies as "Tokyo Express."

'This photo shows Japanese troops loading onto a destroyer in preparation for a "Rat Transportation" (called "Tokyo Express" by Allied forces) to Guadalcanal in 1942.'

And amazingly, I read from an amateur historian that the Japanese military did NOT consider Guadalcanal to be a critical battle at the time??? Is that your understanding?

And Guadalcanal WAS a major turning point in the War in the Pacific...I did not realize that, until researching your questions...

Also, I learned that Australia was crucial! Australia expected to be invaded; and the only reason they were not is that Japan considered them too large to administer.

I asked Dozy about it... he remembers quite a lot, even though he was very young.

They were going to use Guadalcanal as a staging area to invade the New Hebrides to cut off supply routes to Australia. Battle of the Coral Sea and the loss of Guadalcanal ended those ideas.
