“A family isn't about whose blood you have. It's about who you care about.” what does it mean?

It means your family isn't just those you are related to through blood. In my case, I was adopted so I didn't have any blood relations, just people I care about and love that I considered my family. Another example would be a close friend. I have a friend that I consider my sister even though I'm not related to her through blood. :)

Dear Dalia Jassim,

I agree with Stormy-Lynn and DarkM, and I am actually working on the idea of the whole world being my family.

A woman who give birth to you not necessarily can carry the powerful title of "mother" very well deserved.

A family is not always about a blood relation and who we born related to. I born and from the long list of a family tree. I've got a mother and a cousin. The rest of the family members were just carrying the name! Nothing more! Instead i have some friends that they are like a true family to me, brothers and sisters that i've never had. We have no blood relation, but they've been there for me more than those carrying the blood relation.

A family defines into various traits such as; love, passion, loyalty, caring, sacrificing, having each other's back. Be found and seen in both happiness and sadness. Building each other up and more . . . Anywhere these be found, you can call that group a family and vise versa, whether with or without blood relation.

My two brothers and I all married people who came with children. They were always treated like family because they are family.

I have a friend whose parents divorced and the mother got custody. She couldn't take care of him or his brother, and put them in a children's home. He became friends with my brother and his friends. We have all taken him in at one point or another. One family in particular became close to him. So in his 30s they adopted him. This friend knew if anything should happen that he couldn't make his own decisions, he wanted this family to do so. He also didn't want his biological family to have access to anything he may own, not that he owns much.

And even though only one family legally adopted him, he still considers the guys in that core group as his brothers, and they think that of him.

I have friends who are like family. Some of which are closer than some family.

The modern family can consist of many different types of what we now regard as "The Family Unit". It is not as simple as a Mother, a Father and children born from the two. It can have many facets including:

  • Mother, Mother, adopted children
  • Mother, Mother, children through surrogate

  • Mother, Mother, Children from previous marriage

  • Father, Father, adopted Children

  • Father, Father, Children from father's sperm carried by a surrogate

  • Father, Father, children from previous marriage.

  • Mother, Father, adopted Children

  • Mother, Father, Children from previous marriage

  • Mother, Father Children from use of various donors

You can see how this list grows with many combinations . . . You can even have a Brother helping a sister out by acting as a father figure in a household when none are present.

In all these scenarios, it is not necessarily "Blood (DNA)" that says "This is my family" . . . It is who resides within the pack regardless of what constitutes the nucleus. Family is about Sharing, Trust, Nurturing and Love . . .

"Family" can be referred to as having a 'blood' connection AND it can also be referred to as having an "emotional' connection. There is is no assurance that one involves the other.

I have family members that feel like family and family members that don't.

I also have friends that feel like family and friends that don't.

The ones who 'feel' like family are the ones who walk into my house and eat my food .. As much as I tease and complain about that .. I wouldn't have it any other way.
