Good question ......

I have always wondered about "rub a dub dub three men in a tub" "Rock a bye baby" and "Humpty Dumpty."

Yin, back in 2011 phil_m99 asked about Humpty Dumpty on Ask. It was Virginia who gave the definitive answer:

Every once in a while there arises a question on Ask which transcends the daily tedium and makes the whole site worthwhile... I must apologize deeply for introducing a note of levity into these fine and serious proceedings; however, Humpty Dumpty was a cannon!

During the English Civil War (1642-49), he sat upon the wall protecting the town of Colchester, and was fired by "One-eyed Jack Thompson." However, he met his demise when a shot from a Parliamentary cannon blew out the wall from under him, and he tumbled to the ground.

And because he was too heavy for the Royalists and Cavaliers (all the King's men) to reassemble, the strategically important town of Colchester fell - with drastic consequences for the cause of the monarchy.

And if you don't believe me, well, you can read all about it in this book, THE SECRET HISTORY OF NURSERY RHYMES...

There's a modern tendency to add meaning where none existed, however some of them undoubtedly had a meaning,

But here's a story for Jaimie in view of her answer.

There was a barman called Dick whose favourite customer was a doctor always rushed in after his day at the hospital and had one walnut daiquiri (that's a daiquiri with a walnut in it) to settle his nerves after a day at the hospital.

One afternoon, as the time approached, Dick realised that he had no walnuts but, behind the bar, he found some hickory nuts. As the doctor approached he slipped one into his glass, poured in the booze, and hoped for the best.

The doctor took a couple of tentative sips and asked, "Is this a walnut daiquiri, Dick?"

"No. It's a hickory daiquiri, Doc."

Depends on the mood of the lyrics, Eminem is a great example of hiding meanings on his lyrics
