How safe is internet banking? Internet shopping? How do YOU protect yourself?

I do most of my shopping online and always use Paypal. That way, no company, or it's employees, has my banking info.

I haven't paid a visit to my bank for over 2 years. My income is direct deposited and I use my bank's app on my phone to take two photos of any checks I receive and deposit them via photo.

I just had a problem a few weeks ago with not receiving an order from a seller. Turns out that he passed away and left most orders sitting and no one in his family knew what to do. Paypal refunded my money with no questions asked.

The safety factor is pretty good. Generally I've found online banking is at its best (not perfect) when making simple transactions and monitoring your account. Use only reputable banks (that is to say, NOT Wells Fargo). I can even track account activity on my phone.

Internet shopping is a minefield as far as I'm concerned. We maintain specific shopping accounts for internet, separate from other spending or operational accounts. Never mix them. American Express has a secure system, I use Amex for larger purchases.

Wise! We also take precautions. Once a month I go to the credit union and withdraw enough money to cover small expenses but everything else gets done on the Web. It's very convenient.

But ya gotta be careful of the spammers and the chancers.

As long as you use accounts with secured limits, you can minimize the blowback of a hack. And reputation, Hippy mentioned Paypal, I've had good success with that too.
