It seems that gimmicks are looked upon negatively- but this isn't really mentioned in its definition. Are gimmicks bad? Why?

Urban Dictionary says a little different.

A shiny seductive finish applied to a big pile of bull shit..A ploy geared to make you believe something of an untrue nature.

A method of gaining customers or attracting attention by accentuating a certain trait/quality.

I don't know what dictionary you are using but here is the definition from the Oxford dictionary.

NOUN

  1. a trick or device intended to attract attention, publicity, or business.

To trick your customers is not what I would call positive.

Of the five definitions given of gimmick in the online Miriam Webster dictionary site, here are two positive ones:

---an important feature that is not immediately apparent

---an ingenious or novel mechanical device

The other three are similar to what Rooster and Gator Blue posted.

Moral of this story?----make sure the other people in a conversation with you about gimmicks know what you mean by the word in the current context.
