Dear Otis,

I will go with the Schwenkenfelders today, because I had never heard of them and so learned something!

They began around 1540 in what is now Germany, and their emphasis is on inner spirituality over outward form...which makes all kinds of sense to me.

Their Thanksgiving dates from 1734, the oldest in the nation. On this date September 24 they arrived in the USA; giving thanks that they had escaped the religious persecution they'd faced in Europe: driven from their homes, imprisoned in dungeons, even sold into slavery.

I am tearing up a bit as I write this, makes me proud of my country.

Oh Zee...I think I may understand what you are saying...I suppose it can be a fine line, sometimes...?

I wonder if you have had bad experience with religion in young life? Even Dozy did...my own was quite benign...I tend to trust churches, even though I don't attend...

No, early teachings just never resonated with me, which led me to a deeper (and wholly worthwhile) pursuit of understanding. The theistic version was found wanting.

Zee, here is something I may (or may not) post more prominently on Blurt someday... but as you know (probably) I have loved the theistic writings, the saints of various traditions...actually I don't even care, theistic or atheistic philosophy, because what I look for and respond to is a certain authenticity, and it must be provable in my own life.

Anyway... one thing you find in all traditions, if you go deeply enough... is that there is no God. Not in a divisive, either/or kind of way, but for example this, from a Sufism:
"God is a good word, but absolute truth is better."

And that is found in ALL the religions...as we usually use the word, there is no god.
