Sure ! I had a few when I was a kid and my kids had them when thy were young also ! Great little pets ! Loved when they squealed when I opened the vegetable drawer in the fridge so they could get some lettuce. Easy to care for and fun to have !

Rooster, you ain't supposed to eat them with the fur on. And if you have salad with your roast/baked/boiled guinea pig, make sure it's cucumber.

Kidding!

Just a joke. Only kidding. I wouldn't have cucumber with a guinea pig if my life depended on it.

Kidding again. Cucumber actaully goes well.

Sorry, that's probably enough.

I was going to buy one for one of my boys when they were very young. I would have been the one to care for it, but I thought he could learn something by having it in the house.

I happened to mention my plan to my pediatrician.

He remind me that one of the reason that guinea pigs were used as lab animals was that they could easily catch diseases.

And that those diseases could be easily transmitted to young children.

I didn't get the animal.

This was 50 years ago---not sure if that is still a concern.

In all my years around children and animals .. never heard THAT one. Typcially ANY pet store that sells 'sick' animals of ANY size .. is closed up before you can even say .. "pass me the pepto bismol"

It's not that they are sold with disease; it's that they can acquire and pass on various diseases to humans.

That's why I said I don't know if that is still a concern given how we have learned to modify immune systems over the years.
