I home school my daughter and last year for science we had to dissect a chicken wing. Even as an adult it was interesting. It gave us step by step instructions how to see all the tendons and ligaments and muscles and how the joints worked. It was very neat. I never dissected a frog or pig but if I went to college biology I would expect to. Also I would HOPE every doctor I ever went to go see had dissected things in biology! And then in med school...... I would HOPE they didn't just learn how to do surgeries by the internet!
I would say no, don't ban dissections. What better way to learn than through hands on lab work. :)
As long as the animal doesn't die in a painful or slow way, I think that's it's good. We did some in grade 9 science and it was really fun and interesting.
As long as it is not the sequella to vivisection.
YES, at certain levels.
For example, there is no real reason animals should be dissected below college-level biology classes. Those kids can be taught just as much by using books, diagrams, and computer simulations.
The takeing of a life does no one honer.
