After losing your dog when did you know it was time for another?

When my last dog died suddenly, I was devastated and wanted to wait about 6 months to adopt another. Two weeks after his passing, I saw a puppy that was on her way to the shelter and fell in love. She's been my pal for 6 years now.

I don't think we actually can know when the right time is because you never know when you'll see that special dog that melts your heart.

It's tough. If my yard was fenced in, I'd have 3 or 4 dogs. Leashing more than one dog for bathroom duty and walks would be too much for this old man.

My oldest son and his wife are dog fosters and have fostered a dozen or so dogs, including puppies. Of course, they want to keep them all but realize that isn't possible. They did adopt one of their fosters. He's the funniest looking dog I've ever seen, he's got a huge barrel body, small head and very short legs. He was severely physically and mentally abused and is super shy around anyone except my son and DIL.

Thanks, Hippy. I appreciate it.
Saw the cutest thing yesterday. Some old guy with a huge SUV rolled up at the dog park. Got out and went around the back opened up and got out a ramp. Out came 5 dogs of varying sizes and ages. They played until tired, loaded them up and was gone. They all had these content happy faces, I miss that look. All dog owners know that look.

They sure do. Happy dogs just have that look on their faces.

My friend, I am gonna say this with all due respect and love to you. It's just an observation from the outside looking in to a very sad situation. Please don't get another dog thinking it will replace or fill a hole your precious dog left in your heart. There will never be another one like the one you lost. BUT when the time is right (and only YOU will know) then make new memories and friends with another. Another can not replace the one you lost.

About 4 hours after losing my Golden, I went outside still in tears. Sitting near my water fountain I was sobbing. This stray dog that I hadn't seen before came up to me and wanted to play. It stayed and slept over nite on my doorstep.

This beautiful dog ( such a clown ) wasn't mine to keep but that next morning I knew that I needed another dog in my life right away.

3 months later, I brought home another Golden.

After I lost Thor, I thought Arabella would need new dog so she had someone to play with. He passed away in October and we were heading home for Christmas, so I was going to wait until after the new year. I wanted another boxer and I wanted a rescue. I couldn't find one before my husband announced he was retiring and we were moving back to Florida. That put a hold on getting a new dog. We spent time remodeling out new home and I couldn't in good conscious bring a rescue in to that mess. After the remodel, we moved again. And again we had too much going on. Things were just settling down and I had been thinking on starting to look, when a friend text me a picture asking if I knew anyone looking for a boxer boy. I feel in love. I showed the picture to my husband. He asked the dog's name. It was Sully, but my husband misunderstood and thought I said Skully. He was wearing a t-shirt for Skully's bar and took it as a sign.  Arabella is not the most dog friendly dog, but she took to Skully right away.

The point of this story is God or the universe or your pup that has moved on will send you the right pup at the right time.

Our previous pet was our cat, Sweetpea.  We lost her just before my heart surgery four years ago, so it was a while before we were ready to take on a new pet.  We started longing for one two years ago and came home from the shelter with our dog, Lucy .... A perfect fit.  :)

The first time my oldest came home from college and said "We need a dog. It feels too weird to not have one to come home to." . . .

It was too soon for me . . . I love her but I would be closer to her if I had more time to greave for my other dog.

Interesting fact, three years into his college life and he rarely comes home, and keeps forgetting we have this dog . . .
