Is anyone else bugged by the commercial where the teenage boys need roadside assistance to change their flat tires for them? In my family we weren't allowed to get our driver's license until we changed a tire.

Yes I was disturbed as well. I saw it more as an "entitled" feeling like "you gave me the license, car, keys, now give me roadside assistance because i thought it would be cool to do donuts in a construction zone where I would have never guessed i would get a flat tire! I mean WHO LEAVES NAILS AT A CONSTRUCTION SITE!?!?" I could just see it! Pfft!

We had to know too.  Whenever we buy a new vehicle, I find the jack & spare, and I read the proper jack placement in the owners manual.  I also carry jumper cables, and brush up on the jumpstart procedure.

It bugs the heck out of me, especially at the end when the kid asks his friend if what he is holding is a lug wrench. Like your family Gator, we HAD to learn to change a tire before we could even hit the road.

Doesn't bother me so much.  First, commercials always exaggerate to catch your attention.  Secondly, such a happening wouldn't surprise me, as an awful lot of people (both back in my day and currently) are clueless about a lot of things.

Before either of my children were allowed to drive they demonstrated to me their ability to change a tire, and check vehicle fluids and pressure.

As for "clueless, my Mother-in-Law was riding with my (then) teenage daughter when they stopped to get gas.  As required, while the gas was pumping, she grabbed her little tire pressure gauge and checked each tire's pressure.  MIL's comment when my daughter got the gauge out of the glove box - "What's that?

I'm as clueless as KB's MIL

I've never changed a tire, now I couldn't if I had to.

I've never pumped gas. Years and years ago there was a person that pumped your gas. After I got married just never had to get gas.

Nearly all car companies are eliminating spare tires from their models. Some upscale and performance cars are instead coming with run-flat tires.  And most new cars come with roadside assistance included for a couple of years. So why learn to change a tire?
