Want to send 2 small seashells, a small bottle of shore sand & a penny on a keychain from the US to my friend in NZ, but am unsure if they are allowed. Are there any rules that would prevent me from sending these items?

I doubt if there's a problem. I'm in Oz and that wouldn't be a problem here. I think the Kiwi laws are a little less stringent. One of my nemophelistic Angelino friends recently sent me a feather from a red tailed hawk with no troubles.

(I wouldn't try freighting Johnny Depp's dogs across, though.)

I am sure that there would be no problem sending those items. You would have to declare what was in the package, state that it is a present and give the value as "zero".

Since I am a few years away from the US, you should probably check that this is still true.
