Tiddlewinks is a children's game invented by Dr. Jonathan P. Quiddley, who spent many years working with sleep disorders.

Quiddley was a prissy little man who was always fussing about in an irritating manner; this led hisย  patients to refer to him by the unflattering soubriquet of Tiddly.

One night, Tiddly Quiddley was sitting in his sleep lab waiting for his patients to get to sleep when he found a button box left by his receptionist who did needlework while she was on sleep watch.

Idly he began flipping the buttons from his desk into her basket and became so bored that he went to sleep.

On awakening he realised he had just experienced a eureka moment -- one of those rare occasions when great discoveries are made. If being bored could induce him to take forty winks, it might do the same for his patients.

The very next night he issued all his insomniacs with buttons and very quickly the sounds of snoring reverberated around the sleep lab.

He marketed his discovery under the name of Dr Quiddley's Forty Winks but other entrepreneurs saw its value as a children's game and changed the name to Tiddlewinks.

Remember, you learned it on Blurtit.

"A similar verse form called a McWhirtle was invented in 1989 by American poet Bruce Newling. Another related form is the double amphibrach, similar to the McWhirtle but with stricter rules more closely resembling the double dactyl."

(sigh)

That' sincredibly clever, Virginia. The one I remember was simply called "Chappaquiddick" which, of course, is no double dactyl at all. But the verse stuck pretty close:

Tiddly quiddley
Edward M. Kennedy
Quite unaccountably
Drove in a stream.

Please of amnesia
Incomprehensible
Probably shattered
Political dream.
