I don't think most Americans know what a gooseberry is, even though they have eaten them.

Interesting. Gooseberries are referred to goosgogs colloquially in the UK. A couple of years ago, in an Asian-owned greengrocer in Biggleswade (yes, there IS such a place) I asked for 2 pounds of goosgogs. I was greeted with a look of such confusion, that I almost felt guilty about speaking English.

i had a gooseberry bush at a house I once owned. Apparently the wife of the that lived made really delicious gooseberry pie and jam. I only got a handful the whole time I lived there as the birds got them all. Same for the cherries.
