My dog gets a monthly topical treatment that I order online. It is K9 Advantix II . It works good for her. I spray myself good with Off Deep Woods. It contains 25 percent DEET and seems to work good. I always wear light colored clothing when I go for a walk because it makes it easier to see ticks on myself. I've been looking into a product called Permethrin but haven't tried it yet. You treat your clothes and it's suppose to last up to 6 clothes washings. They say it doesn't just repel ticks, it kills them.
As mountain man said protect your pets first. That basically is the main defense. Now ticks can be carried in by a pet and not attached to the pet so you need to exam your pets frequently, e.xpecially if they are an out door pet
Roll around in a bath full of leeches . . . Ticks HATE leeches.
Kidding . . . Most bug repellents work on humans . . . There are collars and pills for dogs and cats that work just fine . . . Although if you have a pet fish, I don't thing the collars or pills will work when you take you fish out for a drag.
I give my dogs Bravecta every three months. I will also run one of those lint rollers made of tape over the dogs when we first get back from a hike, to pick up any critters that are along for the ride. (This only works on ones that have not burrowed in.)
I use Deep Woods Off on myself. I also stay our of places that have high grass and dense brush. When I get home from being out in the woods I immediately undress and throw my clothes in the wash, or if I am camping in a plastic bag. I do a check for the critters and then get in the shower.
The ticks have been bad here this year as we had a very mild winter.
I use monthly Front line Plus on my dog. I use Off on myself. I check my dog before bedtime every night because my house backs up to woods and those ticks are a problem. They are already very bad this year.
