There's no better way to communicate over distance (either space or time). Before literacy students had to learn lessons by rote. An enormous amount must have been lost.

For the same reason reading is. To be able to communicate. I often tell people who are having problems ith someone they care about, write them a letter. You can get your thoughts out without being interrupted. People also tend to be more thoughtful of their words when they write them down. It also ives the other person time to process everything so the respond instead of react.

Written language was arguably the greatest technological advance in man's history. Literacy (the ability to read and write) is essential to the reliable transfer of information and ideas over time.
