I feel the same way. I was tired of spending the money for an air conditioner that only lasted one season, I don't buy my AC's from Walmart anymore either.
You're probably wise to try another vendor, but I think the main concern is the manufacturer and the warranty. Be sure to register your warranty!
I can’t help you Darren cause I have central air. We need it at least 9 months of the year.
I've bought 3 AC units from Walmart ... No problems with them.
Of course, before buying "large ticket" items, I do research on reviews ... Especially by Consumer Reports, if I can find it. All 3 I bought had excellent reviews by CR.
I recently gave two window units to my niece I purchased at Lowes four years ago. And they are still working fine for her. I had a couple mini splits put in last year so I didn't need them.
Considering my past with appliances.... I would go with who ever has the best warranty and the easiest way to handle the exchange or repair for if (when) it goes out! LOL! I've only killed one window a/c and that's cuz we worked it to death. It most definitly was a great window unit.
