It shouldn't be a left up to the child, the parent should make sure they check the child's candy, better safe than sorry.

Not one piece is touched till it’s checked first.  Only let them go to people you know first of all.

Yah it's getting too dangerous. Our local malls have started handing out candy to trick or treaters. Churches do "trunk or treat". They will dress up and decorate their cars and give out candy. They will have games to and some have been doing bounce houses. Not many do the door to door trick or treating anymore around here.

Yes parents should look through child's candy, there is lot nut bags out there can do anything to a child's candy some people have major issues . The world is getting worse and never going to get better history repeats itself often and it's better to be safe than sorry.

Back in my day, people made treats for the trick-or-treaters, popcorn balls, candied apples, etc. One idiot put razor blades in the apples and several children ended up in the Emergency Room because of this. It's easier to be safe and check in than to dig in and find a problem later on.

It was pretty scary. The newspaper went to the Emergency Room and snapped a photo of a kid with an apple and razor blade embedded in his mouth.

If somebody actually poisoned candy ... The parents would not be able to tell.  Sure, take the candy to a hospital and ask them to X-Ray it.  Most hospitals won't waste the resources necessary to do so.  Nor will they waste the resources necessary to determine if poison is present in the candy.

Yes, parents should check. Last year in Wisconsin a parent going through their child's bag found Crystal meth.

The answer is a big YES!

Example, local news here, 1 Nov, has reported a five year old was in the hospital diagnosed with having ingested "meth".
