Was the snake a devil in the garden where Adam and Eve were?

The Eden story is an allegory. It wasn't an apple they were forbidden to eat; God knew what would happen if Adam took Eve's cherry and warned him not to go there.

That's when the snake came into the picture and Adam was unable to resist it's allure. That's the problem with men and their snakes, we often think with them instead of our brains.

The snake wasn't really a devil; it was more of an appendage.

Nope, the snake was not a devil or Satan. The ancient people that wrote the creation story did not believe in Satan and they still don't. It was just a talking snake.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the bible says it was a serpent. Not a snake.

No, the Snake was not a Devil.

According to the Bible and some most biblical opinions, Satan took the form of a serpent  to deceive and mislead Eve into disobeying GOD. There is NO evidence that the fruit was an apple or any identifiable modern day fruit. As you know the Bible doesn't I'D the fruit by name.

I assume you are talking about one particular snake, not the probably benign ones that might have been part of the fauna in the "Garden."

From an interesting site (link below):

But who was that mysterious serpent that started the wheels of rebellion turning? Jews and Christians approach this bible story differently. Christians at least have a clear answer to this question: The serpent was Satan who has snuck into the Garden to lead God’s new creation astray. But for Jews, the answer is less easy. Was the serpent a metaphor? A talking animal? Something else?

Interesting article, Tom. However I find some of his reasoning a bit flawed. He mentions the Balaam story but fails to mention that the angel blocking his way is referred to with the same term as Christians translate as Satan, ha-satan. I also find it strange that it would take 4,000 years before anyone would put 2 and 2 together to understand that the snake was the devil. Since the story was written and hashed out by the Hebrews, I would defer to their prognosys of the story and not some later Greek writer to figure it out.

I only posted that because it points out that there is no agreement among two major religions who have a vested interest in the bible.
