Over Christmas two of my visitors quoted newsy information they had "learned" on Facebook, which they thought was a valid news source. I nodded quietly and said nothing. How do YOU handle this sort of thing?

My son, home for Christmas, told me that George Michael was definitely NOT dead and that his social media accounts had been hacked to make it appear that he was. We just waited for the BBC news. Everyone believes what the Brits say........

What would we do without conspiracy theories? The BBC is certainly reliable, as is the Guardian. In the BM years, the Times was also highly respected.

BM? That's Before Murdoch.

For me I have learned to just keep my trap shut. If it's a touchy subject for me I take a deep breath and just smile. If I really don't want to hear it, then I am lucky cuz I always have "someone" who "needs" me in the other room! Lol!

You nailed it! I avoid confrontation at all times it seems. If you knew the story behind my "training" you would understand it is not necessarily cowardly but, well, yes now that you say it, practical! LOL! I will email you....

No, it isn't cowardly. Tact and thoughtfulness are anything except that.

Depends on the person and the subject. If it someone that I think is open minded I ask them their source and will discuss it possibly looking up the source and other source to get the facts. If it is someone that isn't going to be open to discussion, I let it slide and change the subject.

As a Linguist myself, I only accept information with valid sources and I never take it when people just quote some rubbish they saw on social networks. I confront them until they reveal their source and then the next step would be to teach them not to spread garbage in society. My wife says you should leave them alone and not care about such issues. But I think it is important to teach people to have at least a little amount of critical thinking.

These two were such simple souls that they would resent it very much if I pointed out how silly they were being. They'd have been offended while clinging to their ideas and would have resented me trying to show them.

I just shut up and let them rabbit on.
