St Nicholas was a pretty cool cat:

Saint Nicholas was a fourth century Greek bishop of Mira, which is now part of Turkey.

He was born to wealthy parents, but became an orphan at a young age when his parents died in an epidemic.

The devout Christian dedicated his life to helping the poor and needy, and even spent his inheritance on the cause.

Because of the miracles attributed to him, he is sometimes known as Nikolaos the Wonderworker.

He was particularly known for his secret gift giving and gained a reputation for leaving coins in people’s shoes.

National Miners Day

a day designated by Congress to honor the contributions and sacrifices of miners both past and present.

(Very appropriate)

National Microwave Day

I enjoyed Yin's "Ode to the Microwave."Β  (Sung perhaps to the tune of O Tannenbaum?)Β  Not a day goes buy that my wife and I don't use ours multiple times.

I always remember when my kids asked, "Dad how did you cook before they invented a microwave?" I also remember our first microwave. I did a lot of research on it before we made the big purchase so I was the expert, right. I decided our first meal would be a chicken. I followed the recepie in the "microwave cook book".Β  I will spare you all the gory details, (I did not brown the meat in a regular oven first), however a chicken or turkey in a microwave for almost an hour is officially cooked but it is the most

unappetizing naked piece ofΒ  white meat you will every see.

I find microwaves interesting because they run by electromagnetic radiation, and because of this can actually interfere with other electronic appliances. Used to be a somewhat common problem in regards to wifi or bluetooth because due to regulations, they had to be using the same public broadband. (Now appliances actually do frequency-hopping, which means that it switches the frequency which it is on to avoid being on the exact same broadband with another appliance for too long to cause intereference.)

I remember to test to ses if you microwave was "leaking" you would hold an incandecent "long light" bulb, (no longer manufactured in this country) as from a ceiling fixture in an office. If your microwave was leaking the light ficture would light up.

GOOD GRAVY! That's scary to think! I still remember the warnings not to watch the food cooking in the microwave because it could hurt your eyes. I don't know how true it is anymore but it always stuck with me.
